Plan India’s unveils “Because I am a Girl” Report 2009 Report focuses on economic empowerment of the girl child

On the 22nd of September Plan India launched its“Because I am a Girl” report (both Global and India specific) at theBombay Stock Exchange, the oldest stock exchange in Asia and a symbol of our country’s economic growth.

Mr. Govind Nihalani (renowned film maker and Chairperson of our board), Mr. Raj Nooyi (Member, Governing Board, Plan India), Ms Madhabi Puri-Buch (MD & CEO, ICICI securities) & Mr. Madhu Kannan (MD, BSE) were present to grace the event. And to support the cause of the aspirations of the girl child eminent personalities Kiron Kher, Ila Arun along with her daughter Ishita arun who was our MC as well, Manali Vengsarkar were present at the event. Also present was eminent industrialist and Member, Governing Board, Plan India, Aarti Kirloskar and her daughter Aditi Kirloskar.

Mr. Raj Nooyi, said, “Across the country, girls face double discrimination of their gender and age, leaving them suffering at the bottom of the social ladder. Girls are denied access to health services and education, and also face extremely high levels of violence, abuse, and harassment. In order for India to accelerate the achievement of our development goals, investments in the development of the girl child are the need of the hour.”

He also added, “Plan aims to invest in the Girl Child and bring about a shift in the social attitudes towards the girl child. The programmes at the grass root level are designed to increase girl child participation to secure the benefits of economic growth while breaking inter-generational poverty.”

Ms. Bhagyashri Dengle, Executive Director, Plan India said, “While there are many more girls in the trap of poverty and injustice in India than ever before, there are many more girls today whose lives have changed because of the good work being done by NGOs, corporates and government. And both these stories need to be told – the stories of problems faced by girls as also the stories of achievements and empowerment of girls. The State of the Girl Child in India Report 2009 seeks to capture both these aspects surrounding girls in India today.”

The Bombay Stock Exchange, Asia’s oldest stock exchange had extended their support to the campaign by partnering and hosting this event and allowing it to create history by having young girls from a Plan program ring the bell at the stock exchange. A symbolic support from the corporate world to the cause of girls. The event was also graced by Plan’s associates in the corporate world from Barclays, Ebay, BBDO, Wizcraft, 360 degrees, ICICI Foundation, HSBC and more

The Because I am a Girl report takes a rights based approach to girl’s situation at different stages of her life and the 2009 report on Girl’s Economic Rights and Empowerment highlights the context and life situation of the girls in India and globally. Anil Kapoor and “Slumdog Millionaire” support Plan India to work with disadvantaged children The cast and crew pledge their support to prevent exploitation and abuse of most Vulnerable children


January 21, 2009: Mr. Anil Kapoor along with the cast and crew of the most awaited movie of the year “Slumdog Millionaire” (winner of 4 Golden Globe awards) joined hands in Manré to support Plan India, a child centered development organization working for children in India since 1979. Charity Dinner and Art Auction was organized where leading corporate CEO’s, diplomats, politicians, designers and eminent dignitaries in their respective fields joined the cast and crew to pledge their support. The funds raised will support programs of Plan India for prevention of exploitation and abuse of most Vulnerable Children.

On his return from the Golden Globe awards, Mr. Anil Kapoor visited Plan India’s education initiative in Bharatpur. Speaking on the highlights of the trip, he expressed, “Post my visit to the Plan project in Bharatpur, empowering children especially girls in marginalized communities and creating opportunities to empower them is our endeavor and with the film’s success we are hoping that it will contribute significantly in addressing these issues which will in turn lead to our country’s progress.”

Noted film director and Chairperson of the Plan India Governing Board, Mr. Govind Nihlani added, “The worldwide success of “Slumdog Millionaire” has only reiterated the need to address the issues affecting children. Anil’s constant commitment to Plan India over the past 4 years on various children’s issues ranging from universal birth registration, to preventing violence in schools has certainly made a change in the lives of children across the country. We are looking at intensifying our efforts in helping children from marginalized communities especially the girl child.

Ms. Bhagyashri Dengle, Executive Director, Plan India expressed her gratitude to the cast and crew and all the leading personalities who made a difference. She also said “Plan India has been committed to empower children since last 30 Years in India and with the support of Mr. Anil Kapoor we will make a difference because masses do listen to celebrities.

Leading artists Anjolie Ela Menon, Siddharth and Om Pal have also contributed to Plan by auctioning their paintings during the Charity Dinner.
