Plan is an international, humanitarian, child centered community development organization without religious, political or governmental affiliations. Plan has its presence in 66 countries. We exist because millions of children live in conditions of extreme poverty across the world, and we can do something to help.

Our vision is of a world in which all children realize their full potential in societies that respect people’s rights and dignities. We do this by working with children, their families and the wider community, to help them achieve positive change in their own lives. For 70 years, we have stood for the rights of children, and helped millions of children to have the opportunity to contribute to their societies in a positive way.

We recognize that children are not passive recipients of aid. We believe that long-term improvements and change can only be sustained if children are ‘development actors’: they participate, voice their opinions, and are listened to and taken seriously, because their opinions count.

Plan began its work in India in 1979, and it is one of the largest non-governmental organizations working in the country. Plan now works in 11 states in India through numerous partners. Plan in India reaches out to vulnerable children in remote areas and facilitates development processes that result in increased security for children, their families and communities.

Our child centered community development interventions focus on Child Rights, Child Protection and Child Participation, Children in Difficult Circumstances, Education, Health, HIV/AIDS, Early Childhood Care and Development, Water and Environmental Sanitation, Disaster Interventions, Household Economic and Social Security and Community Governance. The programs are ably supported by process documentation, communication, media, development education, research and evaluation.

Over 7 decades of work at the grassroots, we at Plan have always seen girls as the most discriminated. Our work also shows when you invest in the girl child the impact on development are much higher. A girl when educated educates a family, when empowered financially supports a family especially children, when healthy keeps a family health… It is with this in mind that Plan began the campaign in 2007. A campaign that highlights the issues of the girl child and gathers support to empower the girls and hence, a community leading to a better world.
